About

Name origin
Fin.K.L stands for 'Fin Killing Liberty,' meaning to end everything that oppresses freedom; 'fin' is the French and Spanish word for 'end.'
Formation
Fin.K.L was formed by DSP Media in 1998 through open casting, with Ock Joo-hyun discovered through a radio singing contest and Lee Hyori scouted last, just before debut. They debuted on May 22, 1998 with the album Blue Rain, and after going inactive in 2005 they reunited in 2019 and again in 2026 under Gemstone E&M for a two-year project leading to their 30th anniversary.
Why fans love them
Fin.K.L defined first-generation K-pop girl groups alongside rivals S.E.S., pairing Ock Joo-hyun's powerful vocals with R&B ballads and catchy pop hits. They won the Grand Prize at the 1999 Seoul Music Awards and remain beloved as pioneers whose members all became major solo stars and actresses.
